Dendrochillum magnum

 Greetings from Tom @ Parkside

It is officially Fall here in Pennsylvania, but you would never know it from the weather.   The temperatures this week are going to rise to near 90 degrees.   I personally love this weather and it saves us money on our heating bills, but I suspect some of our plants are a little confused.    We had some cold nights, with temperatures in the 40s so our fall blooming Cattleyas are budding nicely and I am beginning to see many, many spikes on our Phalaenopsis plants.

Another harbinger of Fall is the annual explosion of flowers on our specimen plant of Dendrochilum magnum.    This is a magnificent and rewarding species plant to grow and ours has been remarkable for many years now. (It is pictured above).  I think we have reached our limit and that we will be forced to divide the plant into smaller divisions this time.  It takes two people to move the plant around in the nursery.  John and I are getting too old for this kind of work!

Speaking of work, I am off to Hawaii on October 21st for a ten day shopping trip.   I will scour the popular nurseries for new and exciting plants.  Stay tuned to the web page for additions and specials.

We have had several classes at the nursery in September.  As we have stated before, we are focusing our efforts on events in the nursery this year and decreasing our participation in orchid shows and events.  We had several well attended classes in September and our next are scheduled for October 13th.   Of special interest, John will present a serious, more advanced class on the fertilizers.  We have many accomplished growers in our area and they are interested in knowing more scientific and advanced methods of fertilization and supplementation for orchids.

We have added a new event this year and we're calling it our Diagnostic Clinic.   We hold them once a month and it is a time to bring in orchid plants about which you have questions.  We will use our collective knowledge to diagnose problems and offer solutions.  Check the events page for specific dates.  (Once a month.)

I want also to bring your attention to our All Day Seminar on Saturday, November 3rd.  We have great guest lecturers and vendors, four informative talks and plans to make some great food for those who register for the full day's schedule.  Click on the button here to go directly to the schedule and registration page.    We believe in having a lot of fun on our special seminar days and good food goes a long way in making that happen!

I want to thank the individuals who helped us identify the mystery Bulbophyllum that we recently posted on this web page.  I knew someone out there would be able to research it for us.

That's it for now.  We appreciate your patronage and enjoy hearing from so many people.

All the best.  Tom @ Parkside
